In my early 20s I was diagnosed with HCM (hypertrophic cardio myopathy) an enlarged heart muscle. For 20 years I lived with the side effects of this disease, controlled by multiple medications and pacemakers/ICDs. At 42 years old I received my new heart.
I was 385 days on the transplant waiting list until a match was found. After receiving my new heart, my recovery period in hospital was 139 days, due to non-heart related complications. Still with lots of recovery ahead I was able to return home a week before Christmas to be with family.
For so many years I forgot what it felt like to feel good, now I know what feeling good is like. This was made possible by someone who gave the gift of life, a hero who I will never meet, along with their family who chose to be a donor. Their thoughtfulness gave me the chance to continue on with my life along with my family.
Daily I think about my gift, with a strong heart beating with-in. Always knowing that my hero shines down allowing me to live on and grow strong. Thank You.
